Contrary to popular belief, the athlete is a very common person to suffer from hemorrhoids. Whether it be running, or any other constant high impact sport like soccer, lacrosse or rugby, the up-down jostling causes the hemorrhoid vessels to slowly stretch with overfilling pressure. As they lose normal size and shape, they stretch further and worsen. Even a perfect diet, soft bowel movements and maybe a little family history makes this an issue the athlete cannot out run!

In addition to high impact athletics, strain and improper breathing can also affect hemorrhoid disease progression. Weight lifters will hold their breath or grunt causing blood pressure to spike and spike blood filling into the hemorrhoids as many hemorrhoids have small arterial branches directly connected to them. This spike of pressure also stretches the veins of the hemorrhoids. Just like blowing up a small balloon, the more you increase pressure into it, the walls stretch and fill and then when pressures relax the walls will return to a shape similar to before but usually slightly distorted and not quite the same as before. After this repeats itself over and over, the hemorrhoid becomes more distended and begins to wobble and slide down due to reside blood present making it heavier and more subject to gravitational forces pulling it down. You can see now how a small, flat hemorrhoid can “grow” bigger and in time even fall out with a bowel movement.

Unfortunately, hemorrhoids affect all of us even healthy people. You can be a small-framed, light-weight, vegan, runner and still have problems with hemorrhoids. About half of all people will be affected by this disease to the point in which they need to seek treatment.
