Sclerotherapy works very similarly to IRC in that it destroys the small vein connections above the hemorrhoid pile so that the “large rush” of backwards blood flow into the hemorrhoid is slowed or stopped. This is accomplished by small injections into the tissues just above the hemorrhoids or sometimes into the hemorrhoids themselves. An inflammatory reaction then occurs and helps to scar down the small connections of veins that feed the hemorrhoids. Sclerotherapy injections can be completed every few weeks until the symptoms are abated. It is a patient friendly and effective method that is completed right in the doctor’s office.
