Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Naturally, as a medical center dealing with hemorrhoids, our physicians encounter and treat many cases of IBS. A tough and complex disease to treat, IBS is best controlled by implementing many treatment modalities. Both traditional medicine and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are often used together to gain the best results.

The exact cause of IBS is unknown. It is thought that many factors combine to cause the patient’s symptoms such as: stress, dietary intake, family history of bowel problems, psychological disease, and gastrointestinal sensitivities to spicy foods, food allergens or noxious chemicals, as well as many other contributing factors.

You may have IBS if you have some of these symptoms: abdominal pains and cramping after meals, the feeling or urge to move the bowels without the ability to do so, the feeling of an incomplete evacuation, relief from bowel distress after having a bowel movement, chronic constipation, chronic loose or watery stools, abdominal distention, or the passage of bowel mucus.

Many patients suffer intermittent or chronic symptoms with IBS which may preclude them to having other ano-rectal disorders such as anal fissures and hemorrhoids. That is why proper evaluation and treatment by our board certified physicians and control of IBS symptoms is vitally important for optimal colorectal health.

Since the diagnosis of IBS is more a diagnosis of exclusion, a proper medical work-up including colonoscopic evaluation must be done. Once diseases such as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis), colonic polyps, and other concerns have been ruled out, we can proceed with proper treatment.

IBS is a very difficult problem to treat but is made easier with our IBS program. We utilize the best products and prescriptions available and combined with our recommendations our patients are able to take control of their symptoms and start living life again!
